<img src="http://www.americanchronicle.com/images/politicians/biden_joe.jpg" align="left" hspace="6" vspace="6">By Steve Kraske, The Kansas City Star, Mo. Now we know what to expect from Joe Biden. Fire, passion (he yells at times), boiling-over frustration with the Bush administration, deep-seated foreign-policy experience and the occasional verbal flub. In his first public appearance Saturday as Barack Obama's running mate, the senator from Delaware displayed the traits that have made him so well known in Washington. Biden, 65, left no doubt that he would take the lead in a newly aggressive Democratic campaign, and he displayed it in the first issue he pinpointed Saturday:... more

Tokyo - Following this morning's revelation by Greenpeace of large-scale corruption within the Japanese government-sponsored Southern Ocean whaling programme, the environmental group delivered a complaint to the Tokyo district Public Prosecutor's Office, who gave assurance that the details of the case will be reviewed, pending a decision to mount a criminal investigation. Following conflicting responses from the government's Fisheries Agency (FAJ), the Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) and Kyodo Senpaku, Greenpeace this evening requested a meeting with Japanese government Cabinet Secretary, Nobutaka Machimura. "Entitlement reform" has become a popular phrase over the past few years. As America's baby-boomer population reaches retirement age, the issue has gotten a lot of attention. There is serious reason to be concerned, considering more individuals are becoming eligible to receive Medicare and Social Security benefits. With fewer people working and paying into the benefit system, the revenue base to pay for retirees' benefits is getting smaller by the day. For this reason, Medicare must be reformed and put on a path to economic stability so that future generations can enjoy the security of health care in their retirement ... more
Wrapping up a three-day mission to Kenya to assess the humanitarian situation following the outbreak of post-election violence, the United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator today reiterated the world body's determination to help those forced to flee their homes by clashes. "I have met a lot of people in a very sad and tragic psychological state," said John Holmes, who also serves as Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. "The stories about what had happened to them and their fears for the future were moving, and that has reinforced the determination that I and my colleagues have to do all we can to help i... more
Since the time the Gorkha ruler Prithvi Narayan shah won Kathmandu in 1768 and established Nepal as a unified nation, to 1955, when it became a member country of the United Nations, it has passed through many types of political ups & downs. But after June 1, 2001, when the then emperor of Nepal, Virendra Veer Vikram Shah, his wife empress Aishwarya along with their eight relatives died a mysterious death in royal palace of Nepal, there seem to be dark clouds of distress on the royal family of Nepal. Although after the murder of emperor Virendra his brother Gyanendra took over the reigns of Nepal & his son Paras who remained controvers... more
India, being the biggest secular & democratic country in the world, is showing an example of its gifted & capable leadership in the field of secularism. This type of example can't be seen in any other country of the world. Since the time of Pt. Narayanan, the country got such elites, under whose leadership, India did a considerable progress & its future remained secure in those firm hands. At present, India is showing such an example of leadership, which is incomparable in the world. Since independence, ... more
As expected, the situation in Nepal is increasingly complex and uncertain. Even within the SPA, apprehension and dissatisfaction is emerging. But for the Nepali, there is work to do: 1. Unfortunately, the word Nationalism does not seem to convey the same impact that it used to. So I have been using constructs such as, 'for the benefit of the country' or 'right to decide must reside in the Nepalis, not foreigners" or "need to protect our resources" or the "need to reserve the resources, opportunities, and freedom for Nepalis and not others.' etc. Using such phrases seems to make others receptive, but use of the word nationalism has tende... more
